The Francisc Shaft

The Francisc Shaft was constructed between 1831 and 1835 and it is located in the north-western part of Baia Sprie, on the right slope of the Borcut Valley, at 465 m high altitude. The Francisc Shaft was used both for ore and water extraction. The construction used a hydraulic extraction system, which brought water from Chiuzbaia (from the Tulbure Valley) via the Western Canal. This system was replaced at the end of the 19th century with a steam-powered one.
The shaft’s buildings were set on fire in January 1921, along with the steam pumps from the entrance of the Tulbure Valley. On the surface, the ruins of the construction are still visible, with parts of the stone masonry preserved.
