Mining galleries
Once the works to arrange the Mines Park began, a series of 300-400 years old minigs works were discovered. By studying the presence of sterile waste piles in the area, several coastal galleries were identified. The Mine Hill of Baia Sprie is completely riddled with dozens of galleries, mainly dug manually, to provide access to the main gold-bearing vein. Centuries ago, the excavation of these mining works was carried out using fire and the sudden cooling of rocks. Thus, by displacing large rock blocks, further work could be done using a chisel and hammer.
After the soil and vegetation were removed from the old mining works identified near the sterile waste piles, five such coastal galleries were uncovered. Four of them had collapsed, and their existence was marked by a few wooden support elements. However, one of these galleries remained open, unaffected by the passage of time. This gallery is approximately 30 meters long, after which it intersects the vein. Further, a drift opens along the vein direction, which, with the help of speleologists, was explored for 200 meters. In the drift, the procedures for extracting gold-silver ore can be observed, along with nests of native gold.
Several mining galleries can be visited, but only with a specialized guide.
